Westli is in a major developmental growth spurt right now. It started about a month ago and I happy to say has continued to help him accelerate through some milestones. It all started with sitting, generally speaking, he can sit pretty well right now. Occasionally he still flops backwards, so I still put pillows behind him, but usually he sort of flops forward and eases out of sit. Everyday this occurs with more grace and control. Then he started to pull himself around in what his therapists called a "creep". I think it was more of an army crawl, but whatever you call it, it got him around. Within days of this he was going down the step to our sunken room, and days after that he was up on his knees and up the step from the sunken room. He can climb and descend the stairs with help also. Within the last couple days he has started getting up on his knees in four points, a major skill that his PT has been encouraging. With a little support under his belly, and occasionally on his own, he even crawls a little.
With these new gross motor skills, he spends a lot more time seeking toys around the house. He has even started to fight for toys that he is playing with when Ava tries to take them from him. Once in while I see him try to take toys from her... which normally I would not encourage, but for so long Wes could have cared less, so its nice to see him interested enough to try it. I say try it because Ava is still like five pounds heavier than him, way more capable gross motor speaking, and of course cries louder!
Finally there is language. I posted a video of Ava showing off her speech skills, but there wasn't one of Wes. This is because Wes doesn't have any words. He started making consonant sounds, but never progressed beyond that. And actually we haven't been hearing many of those recently either. I know he has been working on so many other skills right now, and that might account for some of it, but I also know that he is getting more frustrated when we can't figure out what he needs/wants. We're also finding ourselves more frustrated because when he is frustrated he screams and cries... very unpleasantly... and at 17 months old now, he should have the ability to start communicating these things in other ways. (Example, reaching for the object that he wants... which he also doesn't do). So we rented some Signing Time videos from the library. We've already learned some new signs and we are really trying to emphasis the signing to help Wes (and Ava) have the ability to tell us what they need.
Ava knows a lot of words, but is already throwing tantrums when things aren't going her way. We are hoping that the research is right, and signing will help her to alleviate some of that stress too. So far I am having a lot of fun with this... but its only been one day... so we'll see.

Cinderella
![]() |
| From J&J Online |
I took this photo of Taylor last Tuesday. I have no idea what he was doing, but Cinderella's headband, he told me, was his "sunglasses". I love this creativity in him, even if he looks pretty darn strange doing it. I only wish he could explain it to me sometimes.
Excuse the quality of this photo, I didn't really have time to make the exposure and stuff right. But I wanted to share it anyway...

Yesterday the kids were pretty fussy especially when Daddy got home. This is not altogether unusual, but yesterday Ava would not be put down. In fact Ava has never sat still long enough to cuddle, she is normally far too busy for that baby stuff... Jon soaked up every minute of it!
Later we found out why. Poor little bean has something brewing... can it be that season already!?! She woke up several times after we put her to bed upset and unconsolable. She also threw up her dinner and fever reducer... Its going to be a long weekend...

"Get out of the Gene pool"
![]() |
| From J&J Online |
Yesterday at Evan's open house, I noticed a bumper sticker hanging on his science teacher's cabinet... it read "YOU, get out of the gene pool"! I can't really explain it, but this is hilarious. Anyway, I am always amazed when I actually see genetic links between my children and our family. When Livi was a baby, I saw Jon's brother Greg in her... Tom in Taylor... and I just recently discovered who Wes resembles...

Bob!
When I saw this image the other day I initially thought it was Wes, but obviously it couldn't be... since this child is clearly older than Wes is right now.
I didn't get a really good profile shot of Wes, so you'll have to trust me when I say that they have the same nose and chin.
A lot of people recently have been commenting on the rather strange mop on Wes' head too... well, I think I know where that comes from too...

As for Ava, well if any of them have anything from me, its Ava... She is the only one who did not get their Daddy's blue eyes and blond baby hair. Ava has hazel eyes like me, and dark hair... not that they all won't eventually end up with darker hair, but all of the others had the baby blondie for a little while.

Open House
![]() |
| From J&J Online |
Tonight Jon and I attended our first middle school open house. My nephew, in the middle above, just started seventh grade. Since we so often find him in our care, we have made a point of trying to be involved in his academics. I hope that someday he will look back at this time and think that he was somebody really special. It can't make up for the person missing in his life, but hopefully he knows that those here in his life do care about him. We tell him everyday what our expectations are of him. We praise him when he meets these expectations and share our disappointment when he doesn't.
I know that school isn't something he finds enjoyable, but I hope every year that he slowly comes to see that school will allow him to carve a path to a future he can love. So in support of him, his potential, and our expectations of him... we ascended and descended stairs every ten minutes as we "experienced" his day last night. From the experience I can say just a few things... 1) There is no way that he is going to maintain the weight gain that I worked so hard to give him over the summer... he is literally climbing stairs every other hour for the first have of the day! 2) Middle school teachers are a whole lot cooler now that I am a parent and not a middle school teacher 3) My grades were pretty good in middle school, they would be so much better if I knew then what I know now :{ So profound, I know... 4) AC is a necessary component of learning, I vote for installing AC and year round school! 5) Shouldn't the library be filled with books?

My NEW favorite time of year
I found myself bouncing around the house today humming Christmas jingles of joy... must be back to school fever, of which I have been suffering since school let out in June! I had all my children up and dressed and fed before 8:20 this morning. Ready to meet A&T's new teachers at 8:30... ehm, 8:45... the same thing right? My father's morals of "on time" are deeply engrained in my soul... "if you are not 15minutes early, you are late!" I live this motto, though I admit that I have been grossly late for everything since having children...
Anyway, I think A&T are going to have a really good year. Alivya's "symbol" this year is an Airplane... which, Grandma, she picked out all on her own... I didn't even get to see the other choices she was offered... And Taylor picked a Tambourine over a turtle and some other T objects. I don't think he is going to remember the word Tambourine, but whatever. They colored pictures to hang on the wall at school and had their photos taken. I was really surprised during this activity because Taylor sat down and actually drew a picture. It was a very detailed blue boat. Usually Taylor draws very distinctive zig zagged lines, but not today. Livi's picture was classic Livi, squiggly curved lines and faces. They will have orientation on Tuesday Sept. 14, and their first full day will be Thursday Sept 16th. Yikes, two more weeks...

Freedom Lost
SCHOOL STARTS TOMORROW!!!!
YEAH!!!!
Don't get me wrong, nephew, I love you, but it is time. It is time for you to go back to kiddo jail and have knowledge and information drilled into your perfectly capable head for hours a day... thereby relieving me of supervision duties. It is Time!
No tears of growing pains will be shed here... go forth and learn!
And yes, more photo nightmares for me...

Frustration
So that positive mojo must have been intercepted somewhere... never made it to my house. I spent all day today trying to fix the massive tangled web that is my photo filing system. Sigh, ok really big sigh!
Sometimes it would really be easier if technology stopped rather than progressed... my old way of doing things was fine until the new way got better... now that the new is so much better we agreed that we have to bring our old files up to speed and the transition is not as nice as it makes itself out to be.
So I would gladly share some photos here, but I can't find all my photos at the moment, and I think this is going to take a long time to sort out :(

Ready for bed
Tonight I just want to go to sleep. We took care of a lot of challenging patients, not so much medically challenging, but personality challenging. That makes the day longer than it has to be. I am one grateful person to be at home now and ready for bed. Hoping tomorrow I wake up in a better mood than this weekend has left me...

Night out blues
Today I am suffering from the "night out blues"... that being where I have to do all the things I would have done if I hadn't gone out the night before on less sleep than I normally would have had since I would have been in bed rather than cheering on the Pack and sitting in traffic as 67,996 other people tried to leave the stadium at the same time as we did... I know that was a huge run on sentence, but it was totally necessary to convey the mood I occupy as I type this!

Go Pack Go
![]() |
| From J&J Online |
Tonight I left my crazy children in the very capable hands of their father and went to a Preseason Packer game. It was nice to chum around without worrying about anything. I didn't drive, so I didn't worry about parking or traffic. I brought cash, so I didn't worry about do they take charge cards. I left the kids at home and didn't worry about wether or not they were fed a bottle before bed, why they were still screaming an hour later, or if they had the right diapers on. I allowed James and Jon to lead, so did not worry about where are seats were or how to get back to the car. Most people who know me well, know that this giving up of control of EVERYTHING is very out of character for me. And it was very very nice. I would like to do more of it. When the Pack was up 52 to 24 and the guys decided that they wanted to go, we went. Not a big deal. When we wandered out the completely wrong entrance and didn't really know which one we came in... not a big deal. Things I normally would have stressed about.
There was only one moment during the whole evening that was more creepy than stressful when these two guys came and took the seats right next to me. They tried to tell us that we were sitting in the wrong seats. (Which already happened once... and we were...) So I pulled out my ticket, and the creepy drunk guy who had scrunched his butt up tight against mine (ewe) compared them and discovered that he was wrong. Not before his extremely drunk counter part offered me his "nuts"... yeah peanuts... I never wanted to be closer to James more in my life! Thankfully they were only there for ten minutes or so when the people who really owned the seats came along. A thirty something guy and his cutie daughter (3 or 4)... but they were clearly separated from the rest of their group and unhappy about it. She kept asking for her Mommy and begging to leave, and he kept starring at me like he wanted to ask something but never did. She stared at me like idiot when I cheered, and they just really weren't any fun to be around. So I was very happy when they left after the first quarter. The rest of the game was really fun. We had pretty good seats. A lot of the scoring happened right in front of us and with a final score of 59 to 24, what is not to cheer about?! (I suppose if you are a weird Colts fan ;0P
The traffic was awful, but when 68,000 people try to leave at basically the same time from the area of about a city block or two, what really do you expect? And, I wasn't driving, so I really didn't care. I had a pretty good headache though, and I am glad to be hitting my pillow.

Twins
![]() |
| From J&J Online |
Most days, in our house, there is a whole lot of fighting.. and crying.. and whining. Usually about his toys and her toys; touching one and other...etc... not a lot of fun... but rarely, there are these moment of beautiful camaraderie that I just have to get on camera to remind myself that they are twins who at some level do love each other and are happy to have each other. I love this photo for everything it says.

I blogged a while ago about Wes starting to "creep" I think was what people wanted to call it. He still "creep"s, but I think it is just his way of crawling. I think he will never really crawl per say, but he gets around without limit this way. In this really poor photo, Wes has pulled himself up on his knees, a trick his PT has been drilling him on for months (with out success until this moment, I might add). We were so excited to see him doing this that Jon grabbed the camera and started snapping away, not really paying attention to any of the camera settings because we didn't think he would stay there very long... and we were right. By the time Jon walked across the room to show the picture to me, Wes had pulled himself up this step and was rolling around on his back up in the foyer. It was his first time climbing a step, it was literally days after he started "creeping" and only one day after he first went down the step (face forward of course). We are super proud of all the skills he has mastered this past month. Gives us hope that gap between him and his sister is closing and will close quickly, so he can move on and enjoy being just another kid.

Summer Fun

For some reason, Taylor has always hated the big swimming pools. Last year we took A&T to lessons at our local Y, but Taylor didn't even get in the water until the last lesson. When he was smaller, we would bring him in with us, just as we did with Livi, but he would scream and cry, so eventually we put him down to play in the grass instead. He loves the baby pools, but was terrified of the bigger ones. Anyway, this year started out the same any all the others, fear. One day though, Evan talked him into getting in, and they discovered that they could stand in our pool, and that made a world of difference. I watched this all happen, but I was afraid to make a big deal out if it. So I waited about an hour before I went out to take these pictures. So nice to see Taylor enjoying himself with the other kids in the pool on a really hot day!

Parties
I spent most of today preparing for the birthday bash for tomorrow. On the list: Hard boil eggs for Deviled Eggs, Bake Evan's cake, Make frosting in ten different colors (for said cake), figure out exactly how I am going to do the frosting for said cake... clean up, buy beer for brats, clean up again after Ava "uncleaned" everything I had just cleaned, Westli appointment, mow lawn (thanks hun for getting this done, even if you could not see where you were mowing :) Wrap gift, make deviled eggs, laundry-wash, fold, put away, cut down enormous cardboard boxes remaining from weekend spree, for recycling tonight... um, is that all?

A week or so ago, I made a black forest cake. Its a recipe that has been in my box for years, but I never actually made. It turned out pretty good. I learned that tart cherries really are tart. I learned that my children are not fond of tart cherries. And I already knew that Ava could make a really BIG mess! Super cute though!

hippity hoppin froggies
Tonight we took all of the children to the library for a program. It was called splish splash something or other... I am not really sure why it was called that, but we went anyway. The librarian read a book about a crazy frog, then the kids played a little game (or so they called it). Then they "sang" the cutest little song about five little ducklings. It was super cute to watch Alivya participate in this activity. She totally came out of her shell and did all the hand motions... Taylor would not even go up with the other kids, he clung to Jon. After the song they got to color and assemble paper frogs. This was an activity that Taylor and Alivya really got into. I was surprised how well both of them colored. Taylor actually got upset when the librarian turned off the lights for the little movie that was on the agenda next. He sat on my lap in the dark until every bit of that frog was colored. The little move that Taylor missed, was pretty ridiculous. It was a really simple cartoon drawn about a jingle about a frog. It was copyrighted from the seventies, and was not too off the Duck and Cover type vids we studied when I was in high school.
Ava and Wes went crazy in the large empty room that all this was being held in. They scrambled on all fours all around the room. Ava squealing with pure glee. Wes got into this himself, but not as loud and obnoxiously as Ava. It was a really tough sell for them, neither sat very well through any part of the half hour event. Hopefully some library time during the school hours will help with this.

Rare
Did you like those photos of me? Rare, I know... don't get used to it :) I can be amazingly cooperative when it comes to my really good friends. I love you Yollande!!!
Now its back to the old me... Jon and I finally decided that we needed a new kitchen table. The one we had was an old one that his parents had used when his older brother was a toddler. We have used it since we moved into an apartment in 2001, so it was time. Here is where I would insert a photo if my cameras weren't in event mode, and my computers not clogged with event data... We'll get it up soon.
We also decided that the very old "old lady" love seat that I haggled from an estate sale in 2008 needed to go... shocked? I knew it! I also purchased a very expensive blanket to drape over it as a slip cover. This worked really well until about a year ago when Taylor and Livi got big enough to pull it off. Recently, my blanket has spent more time on the floor than the couch, and all of my guests or Wes' therapists had to live with the stinky ugly "old lady" couch... So Friday morning I watched as it disappeared into the back of our local waste management department truck. See how politically correct I am? In its place we have two gorgeous and very comfortable lounge chairs.
So the moral of this post is: Jon should not allow Julie to enter or visit within 100yds of Old World Market, ever again... :)

One of my very best friends got married. Congratulations Yollande and Mexton! This morning started out very early. Jon put my hair in hot rollers, created his very first "updo", and got the kids all ready to go to Grandma's for the weekend. I can't express how proud he makes me on days like today...
So my "updo", like any other time I learn a new word or phrase, expect to hear it a lot:: warning::

We went with a "messy bun on the side" concept. I think its pretty darn good given that Jon can't make a pony tail to save his soul, and has never used a bobby pin in his life. (and this is after the first of using hot rollers, a first for both of us actually!) Thanks hun for being such a good sport! I probably should mention here that this is not the first time I have given my hair over to Jon's hands. I have in the past leaped off a cliff and allowed him to color my hair. He does pretty good work, imagine what he could do if he relaxed a bit though!!
And best of all,

my "updo" was still... up done... at the end of the evening. (for the most part)
I fell in love with the french language many years ago. I don't speak it great, and at best, I do a broken college version, but I love to listen to it. Since french is Yollande's native language, and many of her friends and relatives came to the wedding, I got to hear lots of french. I will say that I sort of fell in love with French culture at her wedding though. This photo is of her brother in law, a native frenchman. Who, by the way, speaks wonderful lovely french that I could listen all the time. This picture isn't anything special, BUT look at his suit!!!!!!!!! Only a frenchman could get away with a suit like that! I love it!!!!

This wedding was also the most fun I have ever had at a Catholic Church ceremony. This cultural interlude was awesome. The colors, the dancing, the joy... weddings could be really fun if we all adopted a celebration like this in the middle of our stuffy church weddings... Just my opinion...

Refi
Yesterday we closed on our refinancing. Thankfully! The whole process was not without its quirks. When we got there we discovered that the amount we were told to bring was wrong, not by much, but wrong... the pile of documents to sign was like three times as much as I remember signing for original mortgages... and Jon's name was spelled incorrectly on all of them, sometimes multiple times on them. Which of course was a big hassle. The title company guy was trying to lighten the overall mood, I think he would rather have been a comedian but realized the mortgage business might make him more money. Anyway, at least it made things feel less stressful. I hope in thirty years, when hopefully this thing will be all paid off, that I will be relieved by the thousands we saved by doing it, but right now, I just feel like we have thirty more years. I probably would feel more financially sound if I had this ability to look past here and now, but I don't.

Pre school to Seventh Grade
Today my life took a major warp as I crawled through a pipe and landed in Middle school!! My sister had to work, so I took Evan for his Seventh grade registration. I didn't see the "long lines" that I could have avoided if she had gotten things taken care of on Tuesday, but I did sweat off about ten pounds in the hour and a half it took us to find everything and run around the building. I don't know who was in charge of organizing registration at James Madison Middle School in town, but I think my nephew probably could have made a more logical pass at it. I have attended enough registrations in my day to know that registration is usually chaos... so to ward off unnecessary chaos, organizers usually have someone directing traffic... a big table right when you walk in to tell you where the he** to go (especially when you have five children, four of which are four and under, its 96 degrees outside...so 110 inside... and completely lost...) WRONG!
When we walked in, there were two tables on the right, four in front of us and one on the left. There were really big signs telling us what was at those tables, but no signs with illustrations of the paperwork in my hands saying "Stupid, turn this ---> in here!" Yes, anything over 85 degrees requires this sort of stupidity level, cause my brain cells were shedding to decrease the over all temperature in the building!
Once I finally got a grip on reality and decided I was never going to get out if I didn't figure out what I needed to do, I discovered that everything I need was spread out all over the building. On a cooler day in Sunny Wisconsin in August, I might have appreciated this, however, today, I needed it all to be one huge room (with a big old barn fan... I realize this would have totally screwed all the paper shuffling, but we are talking about my needs right now, not theirs!)
Finally, why not just total up all the little crap that my seventh grader needs so that I can right one, albeit very large, check and be done with it. Sitting around at every single table looking for a pen to write out separate checks for every five dollar fee, was just plain irritating! God bless anyone out there whose bank actually charges per check, most of the parents there were writing out five or more... ridiculous!

This weekend a dear friend is getting married. This friend asked me about a year ago to put together a photo booth for her wedding. I'll admit that the idea had never crossed my mind, and I groaned a little at the concept. But Jon was all about it, I guess he had read about it elsewhere and wanted to do it. So, we set out on a journey to get it done. In July we tested it out at another wedding that we had already booked. Their guests really got into it, and it was a huge success. We got to work out some kinks and I am really excited to showcase it again at Yollande's wedding on Saturday!
Now I am going to get a little geek-ed out here, yes I have been living with my husband for a LONG time... forgive me... The new Lightroom - version 3- is AWESOME... It took me awhile to admit to its awesomeness, but I'm there... I shot these images of our cats from Lightroom via its tethered camera feature. They were instantly uploaded, I made a couple of adjustments, through them right into one of my new custom made photo booth printing arrangements, and exported the file.
Just for fun I included the graphic watermark that I designed for the wedding on Saturday, and I am really super pleased. There is always something more that as a photographer I wish I could tweak, but for the most part, I am pretty darn happy.

And don't we just have adorable kitties... who have taken to sleeping on my desk in a very pathetic attempt to evade Ava... who has taken to chasing them around the house to pull their tails! We don't encourage this of course, but the cat really does have to get smarter and run away, not challenge her. Because frankly, if any of my children shouldn't be challenged in this way, its Ava... she is the strongest, the biggest, the most stubborn, and does it all with sass and heart melting cuteness. Oliver, you have met your match!

Drama
Hey Sis, I have enough drama of my own :)
My sister's apartment complex has a pest infestation, and has cost me a lot of time over the past couple days! What is worse, is that they don't seem interested in doing anything to permanently take care of the problem. Ehm, fleas... (and no, she actually doesn't have any pets...)
Anyway, after getting her some spray and flea killing laundry soap, loads of laundry, etc. I have encouraged her to find the motivation to move on. No way would I stay there. So even though my own drama has been fizzling out, hers has kept my headache going strong!
In other news, Westli has repeatedly descended one step, and yesterday climbed it too...

Summer
Since August 4th, I have a new motto to my world... It goes something like this: "Now that my class is over...." Fill in the ending with any number of summer activities that I have been putting off in order to study microbes and move along in my educational goals.
So I hope to fill the remaining weeks of summer with a lot of fun activities. So far I am not doing great, since two of the five children here are sitting in front of the TV watching politically aged programming "Peter Pan"... just finished the song "Why is the Red man Red"... hmmm....
Two of five are napping (this is a good thing) definitely still need napping (me and them!)
And finally one is running around the house dragging my "carry on" luggage bag packed with toys behind him.
Of course there is me... sitting here in front of my computer yet again... I am not totally veging though. I am working on uploading the images from our second wedding shoot and baking a cake... which my butt could do without... but I really like baking. Sigh...

Working in the Rain
I never mind going to work (at the hospital anyway) when its raining. The funny thing is though, as soon as the sun came out, we got really busy... Why is that?
Today has been exhausting... I'm off to bed.

History 101

Those of you that know me pretty well, know that I am at heart, somewhat of a history buff. Today I came upon this website which nicely compliments two of my passions, history and photography. I just love these creations, so please go take a look. The image above doesn't really do them justice.... They are super cool!

Pool
Jon and I finally got in the pool this week, twice... impressive. Last year we took Tay and Liv to swimming lessons. It was a lot of fun for who ever got to hang out with Livi, the other had to sit with Taylor trying to talk him into first sitting near the pool, then maybe getting some part of his body in the pool. The last day I think we got him to go in... maybe the last two days. So it was no surprise that this year he was all "I don't like the big pool". It was equally no surprise that he really does like the big pool, once you force him in and he gets used to it. The instructor taught us to sign "Popcorn man" to the tune of Do you know the Muffin Man?. Every time you say "popcorn" you jump... Taylor loves this, but is totally afraid of it both at the same time. He squeals for you to jump, but scolds you for jumping.
Yesterday, Evan talked Taylor into getting into the pool with him and Alivya, who loves the pool even more now that she realized that she is tall enough to stand in it. I was watching them from the living room, Taylor, Alivya, and Evan all in the pool having a blast in the hot summer sun. Makes me so proud when we have these little victories over fear.
Speaking of which, I think we have gone a whole week without an accident... Taylor, OMG, you're growing up on me! (and not a moment too soon!!!)

Pediatric physiatry
Wes had his six month appointment with his pediatric physiatrist yesterday. Basically she was pleased with his progress. She wants him to have an audiology appointment to rule out any hearing problems (this makes me nervous only because this is exactly how we ended up with three sets of ear tubes for Taylor)... Anyway, that is scheduled for next Thursday. She also wants us to figure out how to wean him from the Spio suit and consider the blood tests that we talked about last time. She said that generally speaking, children who sit by the time they are two, will also walk, eventually... so she is not concerned that Wes won't walk. Good news... We are also pleased to see him make some progress. I love watching him explore the house, and I have a little more freedom since I don't have to cart him around the house with me. (Not that I did that all day long, but when I didn't, he would eventually start screaming... so it was carry him with me, or listen to him scream...) Wes is also gaining weight, FINALLY! The magic 20lbs turn the car seat around mark is approaching!!! Hopefully this will make our car rides more enjoyable for all of us too.

On that note, I promise that we will get some pictures of the kids up again soon. I don't like to download photos of the kids when I am working on wedding photos. It just gets too complicated right now. So we are in post processing of our second wedding that we shot on July 31st, then we have just one photobooth to shoot on August 14th... then I can shoot away photos of the kids! Not that we haven't been taking photos of the kids, just not nearly as many. For now, you'll just have to watch Wes' video clip ;) He has really taken off! Since I shot that video (about a week ago) he has learned to motor himself all over the house. He has even explored the sunken room a few times. This has gone better than when Ava did months ago, Wes is far more cautious. But Wes is also more sensitive, so even little tiny bumps are like really major tantrum worthy events. More on that later.

Taylor-isms
My kids, like most kids, do say the funniest things!
Taylor: "When Westli becomes Ava, then he will hold his bottle!"
I really need to start writing them down, cause at this moment, this is the only one I can remember...
Taylor thinks in if/then statements. Every action has a very positive consequence. I wonder how long this mentality will last?

Fried Rice
A couple weeks ago one of my coworkers brought a really cool recipe book to work. It had recipes from popular chain restaurants. I copied several to try at home. One included Fried Rice. I decided to put this one to the test this week and put it on our menu. The only problem was that it calls for Japanese short grain white rice... which of course is not available at Wally world... so after the wedding yesterday, we decided to stop a local Asian Food Store. This experience was one of many words.
We were, of course, the only Caucasian people anywhere in sight, and we had no clue where to find whatever it was that we were looking for. Not to mention that the shelves were literally packed full of weird food, most of which was labeled with characters that we could not read. It took a while to figure out that the fifty pound sacks at the front of the store were not salt like our grocery stores, but rice! We giggled a lot when we got to last isle that was full of very American food like baby cereal and Wally world brand peanut butter... the I decided to go ask for the rice. When I came around the corner, I found the couple (owners) staring at the dozen or so security monitors pointing and laughing at us while speaking in their own tongue. A lesser person might be offended at this, but we thought it was hilarious that they found us as funny as we found them!
Of course we don't carry cash, and we were relieved that they accepted credit cards, we did not see, however, that they required a minimum ten dollar purchase. The woman was so nice and was willing to lower it to eight dollars since it was clearly, "our first time". We ended up buying two bags of rice, which was over the ten dollar limit. But I sincerely appreciated her offer.
Overall, it was a good experience, definitely a fun cultural lesson for both of us I think!

Weddings!
Check out our Photo Gallery here!
Today we shot our second and final full wedding for the season. In a couple weeks we are going to do a photobooth at a friend's wedding, but compared to the stress of doing full weddings, that will be a breeze. I prayed (in as much as I "pray") all week for a nice slightly overcast morning... I think the powers that be are confused by use of the term "slightly". Slightly raining huge wisps of hazy mist doesn't count as "slightly overcast". And of course the down pours in the hours leading up to the big moment don't count either. Thankfully we were able to shoot all of the formal poses outside where there were gorgeous beautiful flowers to give life and color and happiness to the backgrounds of my photos (and there by compliment the bride and groom who so desperately wanted the rain to end...) You gave it a really good try Caleb!
So, more work to be done, a lot of weight off our shoulders :)

Another crazy busy week
This week was a huge blur. We had so much stuff to get done and I can't remember doing it all. Alas, here we are at the end and most of it is done. Tomorrow we have our second of three wedding events for the summer. The festivities begin early at nine in the morning, but are done by three... here is hoping that the forecasted rain holds off for us. Sunday I am off to work, a twelve, Monday I have my last "quiz" then Wednesday I plan to take my final... then I am done with Micro!!! Super excited about that. Crossing my fingers for a good, early, priority date in the fall so I can start core classes in the spring. Time will tell. So lets begin this crazy busy weekend!!!

Delivery
Today we delivered the photos from our first summer wedding shoot. Not to toot my own horn, but the pictures where pretty amazing. I think our clients (and friends) were very happy. Jon put together a really creative composition of their reception pictures to the song "Bad Romance" by Gaga. I think it will probably make an appearance here when he gets it up... I just have to say though, Kristi... if you are reading this... Jon is fully aware that his life is on the line from the moment he proposed using that photo! That is all I will say.

Twist
So remember how stressed I have been about having the house appraised? Today we found out that the appraisal has been waved! All this work I have been killing myself trying to get done for nothing! Okay, not nothing... its all stuff we've been "going" to get done "someday"... so now its done.
I also received notice that I have been given another scholarship :) Yeah!
Jon had a pretty good day too... new vids, sigh :)

Getting there?
I think the house is getting there, you know ready for this appraisal... yesterday Jon finally got the bike hangers up so that the bikes can hang from the garage ceiling. I patched up some cracks and holes that I have been neglecting. Jon and Evan cleaned up the basement, I haven't been down there yet, but my exectations are up :) Jon even cleaned out his closet AND purged! Super excited about this. I love the feeling of this weight being lifted.
We defrosted the fridge on Friday and Jon took the back off to visually inspect the fan... looked fine... so we have not had any error messages since we plugged it back in, so maybe there really was ice built up and its fine now. Here is hoping.
We purchased a new vaccum though, I am hoping we made a good choice. Time will tell I guess.

Four years
Four years ago Jon started this blog more or less, I think, because bloggin was a new trend. Shortly after, we became pregnant with Taylor and Alivya, and the blog became a tool to communicate pregnancy news. Then it evolved into neonatal news, milestone reports, and the like. For a while, Jon would still post, but generally speaking, it has slowly become my blog. A place where I journal about the kids, my day, my ups and downs. I try to post a lot of pictures (of the kids of course) this is because we have "family" all over the country, some are siblings, some are really special people who aren't technically speaking related to us, some are friends that we have become close to. Over the years I have become a committed blog reader also, and through that, I have developed some really unique friendships with those bloggers.
As a mom, daughter, sister, wife, student, healthcare worker, and all the other hats I wear, I have found my blog (and sorry hubby, it is my blog now), theraputic. Sometimes it helps me laugh, sometimes it makes me cry, sometimes it makes me angry, but mostly it makes me connected. Connected to other people who care about us even though they can't be right here experiencing life with us. Although I sometime miss Jon's input, I hope that the information I share helps make those of you that we care about feel connected too.

When it Rains...
You know how the saying goes... pouring is about all that has been happening around here... both figuratively and literally. The storm water run off in the backyard has been as high as I have ever seen it, everyday it seems to beat its own height. I think yesterday its span was over 25feet and some of our idiot neighbors actually when rafting down it. It was at least five feet deep. The soil is so saturated, and my weeds are growing like crazy.... sigh, another thing to attend to.
Jon and I have been talking about refinancing for a lower mortgage rate, and a couple weeks ago he found a good one. We spent the better part of last week gathering copies of our financial documents and signing page after page... now we are waiting for the appraiser to call... The appraisal, has me so nervous. I know that the economy is sort of against us, so I want to present the best version of our home... so this week, we've been attending to all sorts of "little" things that we have been "meaning to get to", but haven't. Like replacing the pulls on the closet doors, touching up the paint, replacing broken light switch covers, etc. I think there is a bad aura in the house too, because since we started fixing it up a bit, things have been breaking... the electrical man was hear on Tuesday... water got into an outside outlet and blew the fuse... turns out the outside outlets were put on the same fuse as our kitchen... so we had no electric for our stove and appliances for a couple days. $150 gone... Then yesterday the refrigerator started humming very loud, and finally an error message appeared last night... here we go again... what could be next? I don't even want to think about it. I just want this appraisal over so I can stop living in fear of it.
Edit: First thing after posting this original post, I tried to vacuum... guess what!? Yep, my vacuum isn't sucking anything... I give

Therapy and more
Today Wes saw his PT and Speech/feeding therapists. They were both a little surprised that Wes tested so low on their little exams.. around 6 month skills. I wasn't at all surprised. While he is making some really big gains right now, he is very behind. I feel a little vindicated today.
I guess we are going to do some oral motor exercises, did you know that you can exercise your mouth?!

Nose to the grindstone
I had a week off of school last week. I am not sure if it was because suddenly I had so little to do, or if it was because I was so sick, but that week felt like a month... a month that I totally needed! Alas, it had to end. I have a paper due next week, (which I just have to print out cause I did it last week :) I have a quiz due on Thursday and Monday, work on Wed, Thur, Sat, and Sun... Wedding the following weekend, last weekend's wedding pix to process, two weeks of class left after that, and so much more to do... so it is definitely back to the grindstone! And, my legs are still flopping around like Jello... did I mention that I have all the kids during the day too?
I am crazy!
I am crazy!

18 month well child visit
Yes, the "babies" are 18 months old already! I can't really believe it either. Both are very healthy, but have had some developmental delays common to preemies. I guess I will start with Ava, who is my only baby who is continuing along the growth chart in the average column (UNADJUSTED for prematurity). Ava is developmentally more along the age of 12 months, which means that she is showing about a three month delay (18-12=6-3 (for prematurity)=3months)... She is starting to experiment with standing independently, crawls, cruises along furniture, climbs steps, and, if positioned correctly, comes down steps. Ava eats all sorts of foods and textures and seems to prefer meats that she can finger food. She still prefers purees, but since they are not being offered as much, she is starting to concede to her fate... Recently we added her chair to the kitchen table so she sits with us at meal time and eats right from the table. Ava has had an explosion of vocabulary recently. She likes to copy words, so she can say: buba, bottle, baby, Amy, Ava, Evan, bye bye, night night, milk, more, mama, dada, kay, cracker, up... I am sure I am forgetting some.
Wes is having an explosion of development too right now, unfortunately he has so much to catch up on. He started eating better recently, more like 5-6ounces per feeding, up from 2-3, feedings are still like 4-5 times per day (by feedings, I mean bottles). Wes also gets solid foods twice per day, which are getting better too. He eats best when he is very distracted by a toy, and has accepted some more textured and thicker foods than he had been. Like mashed potatoes and corn. Fruits are his least favorite. He is not finger feeding yet as he continues to gag when food is too chunky... we still offer graham crackers and dissolvable solids when he has an empty tummy.
I guess he has a really big head, somewhere in the 90th percentile for head circumference. He finally broke 18lbs, can't wait for 20 though when I can turn around the darn car seat. Wes hates riding in the car. I hope that turning the seat around will help with that. He spent several hours on Friday's trip screaming, and its not one of the cute types... its very effective, you want to do whatever is necessary to make him stop!
And there is gross motor skills, this is perhaps the most frustrating of all his delays. I asked his therapists to score him, and the results that I have heard so far have him around 7-9 months in development. Gross motor wise he is making really huge gains in the past several months, but he was doing so little then, that gains still put him pretty far behind. Last week he started to army crawl, it is very sporadic, only gets him a foot or so at a time, but when combined with his killer rolling skills, the kid can really get around! His hands also jet out grab everything right now. While this stage is annoying, I am so happy that he is doing it. I worried that he might not do it at all. He is clearly seeing things and motor planning for how he is going to get them. He finally getting some entertainment from the toys that litter my house, and that means that I am spending less of my time entertaining him. He finally sits pretty good, however he lacks the reflexes necessary for catching himself when looses his balance. Unlike Ava, for example, when he starts to fall he falls hard and can't readjust to save the sitting position (although this is a skill that will come). Therefore it is really difficult for us to walk too far away from him when he is sitting. Pillows only do so much. Wes also can't get into or out of sit (at least not gracefully or controlled). It pretty much is falling with style to watch Wes come out of sit right now.
So definitely progress on the developmental front...

CP Study
![]() |
| From 2010, Best of |
We enrolled Taylor in a study to help the researchers understand CP (Cerebral Palsy) better. So every six months we make a road trip to Madison where he spends about two hours doing "testing" activities. Then he gets a prize, and Livi usually gets one too, and we make the hike back. This is was our activity for Friday.
I also finally dropped off my paperwork for my laser correction at the DMV and got a new license without restrictions! Shopped for clothes for the wedding tomorrow, and picked up our lawnmower from the lawnmower doctor.
It was a productive day, glad its over :)

Yesterday after the babies nap, we packed up all the kids and traveled to Green Bay for a couple hours of cheap entertainment at Bay Beach Amusement Park. This ride was by far Alivya's favorite (conveniently we forgot the camera, so none of these children are mine, just pics I found online :(

This was the only ride we all went on, and the one I think was Taylor's favorite.

When I was a kid, This ride was my favorite, but Taylor and Livi, and most of the kids on it actually looked bored :(

It was on this ride that Taylor started to get into the whole riding thing. Last time we went, two years ago, Taylor wouldn't go on anything. Not a problem this time. It was interesting though, that all the other kids enjoyed the bells and steering wheels, while Taylor stared intently at the mechanisms that made the rides go around. The only steering wheel he liked was the one in the first picture, that actually does make the car go in and out. Livi wanted to do this, but didn't really get it.

I was a little surprised when Livi wanted to go on the merry go round. I was even more surprised when Taylor insisted on sitting on the bench, rather than riding a pony.

This is the most annoying ride. There are guns attached to each of the planes and they make this high pitched siren... very annoying! Really felt bad for this ride's operator.

Which brings me to this ride, the only one we got Taylor on last time (kicking and screaming though)! After our little picnic/dinner, Ava and Wes were getting really fussy and tired, but Livi wanted so bad to go on one more ride, so Jon took them on this, and I sat with the screaming kids in the car! Both babies were out within two minutes after we started for home!

We had a nice calm peaceful forth right here at home. This is a photo of Jon's mom teaching Livi to cut the tops off strawberries and clean blueberries. She had such a good time doing this, though she ate more than she put into the bowl! It was unbelievably hot and humid that day, so we didn't really spend much time outdoors, Taylor had already tanked out before this picture was taken. I worked 3p-midnight, and got out just in time for the pouring rain. It was a pleasant day in the ER though, never got too crazy. I am thankful for this since I was both working alone for the last five hours and pretty sick from my sinus infection.
Jon is off today until Tuesday, little vacation of sorts... we are off to Madison for Taylor's study tomorrow, I work on Sat, then we have the first of three wedding shoots this summer on Sunday. Monday is a day for recovering, hopefully!

Yes, I encouraged them... I think they are pretty cute, and temporary!

And Livi didn't quite understand what I wanted her to do. She just got all stiff on me, clutching her arm like it was broken...

Since July 1st
I have been deathly ill... ok, so I had a sinus and double ear infection that was rapidly moving into my lungs. I was pretty sick. I think the antibiotics that I started on Friday have finally won the battle, but are still working on the clean up. The crap I keep coughing up and the difficulty I continue to feel when attempting to breathe is testament to this fact. Still, I managed to work over the weekend, perhaps against my better judgement, Saturday at least... Looking forward to feeling better, and getting a little R&R for the rest of this week. I finished my nightmare paper today, printed my two labs due on Tuesday, and am on break from school through Friday. Jon also took a couple days off, so this IS my summer, today through Friday.
